This project focused on the laser cutting process to create 3D forms whilst encapsulating or holding a glowing candle.

The final design used two acrylic plastics – one an opaque grey pearlescent and the other a white translucent opal.

The result was a slotted structure resembling an icosahedron with connecting members forming outward spikes. The Candle was housed inside a bent base.

Not entirely sure how the design came about however it’s fairly clear how easy it is to get the laser cutter to produce intricate parts easily.

The materials helped provide a glowing effect and cast interesting shadows. The selection of light and dark elements significantly changed to final glowing look.

The design could be easily setup for high volume manufacture, flat pack sale and snap fit user assembly.
